I need to rant. So many things to rant about for the past few days. I shall let out my pent up frustration now. Ignore this post if you do not want to read my rantings.
Let’s start with the most recent incident: ensemble practice. Okay, there’s nothing much to rant about just that I was late for ensemble practice although I left my workplace half an hour early.
Why? Cause I overslept. Oh well… I’m too tired nowadays.
Nowadays, I have been “quarreling” with the law clerks who always called to get certain information from us. Argh. They are supposed to get the information online and not suppose to call us to get the information. Law Society has already informed them and yet they still called us to get the information when we are not supposed to give. Some law clerks gave lame excuses and keep insisting us to give the information. However, we are not allowed to give and ended up have a mini “quarrel” with them. Seriously, their pay is like higher than us and why are they still so lazy and prefer to just call us to get the information and not from the online system. The online system is there for a reason.
I had a quarrel with Byron last night and ended up not able to sleep well last night. In the end, I am so tired his morning that I looked so blank out (ie. stoned) in the morning. Don’t worry. I didn’t made any mistakes though. Why am I so angry? It must be due to the pent up emotions from the previous quarrels. Please Login or Register to read the rest of this content.
Another incident that happened yesterday is this SMS (ie. text messages) conversation.
Me: Bored.
Byron: Fold more paper plans? Lol
Me: More? I never fold paper planes… O.o
Byron: I know. I mean, boxes need to hold something ma, but planes can shoot at people you don’t like. Lol.
Me: -.- lame and childish.
Byron: Lol! Childish? WHat’s so wrong about being a child? Lol! It’s fun!!
Me:-.- It’s childish, not child-like…
Byron:Eh… So, what’s childish then? Kindly give me a definition?
Me: (knowing that he always like to use the definitions that he found online to rebut me…) Go google la. -.- or ask Rayner the difference between childish and child-like…
Byron: … you can’t even give me a definition and you say that it’s different… winz… (as usual, he assumed something and always insisted that I am the assumptious one.)
Me: There’s a significant difference between not able to give a definition with don’t want to give.
Byron: And again, please explain. (I was quite shocked to see this reply. Seriously, is my reply that hard to understand???)
Me: Forward the message to Rayner and ask.
Ignoring the Singlish both of us used, what is so hard to understand this sentence: “There’s a significant difference between not able to give a definition with don’t want to give.” I need your advice. Do you understand that sentence meant?
By the way, for those who are feeling lazy to google for the definitions of childish and child-like, here are the definitions.
Childish: marked by or suggestive of immaturity and lack of poise (from here)
Child-like: resembling, suggesting, or appropriate to a child or childhood; especially : marked by innocence, trust, and ingenuousness (from here)
And the main difference between the 2 words…
If I understand Richard correctly, I think I agree with him. I see “childlike” as innocent behavior, like a child’s. I see “childish” as an adult behaving like a child, which is inappropriate. Here’s what the OED says on “childlike”: “Like a child; (of qualities, actions, etc.) like those of a child, characteristic of a child. Almost always in a good sense, with reference to the innocence, meekness, etc., of children; opposed to childish, which is generally used in a bad sense.”
A close to perfect comparison of the 2 words from here.
I only took a mere 1 minute to find the difference between the 2 words. No text message wasted, less time wasted on typing the text message. Why is it so tough for Byron to even google for it?
In summary, when someone called you childish, it does not mean that you are like a child. It carries negative meaning that you are immature. What?! Fold paper planes to aim at others whom you don’t like. It’s a lame and childish idea/joke. It’s not even funny.
On the other hand, if someone called you child-like, it implies that you have the innocence like a child. The word, “child-like”, carries a positive meaning, unlike “childish”.
Since I know he has a rather big ego from previous conflicts, it isn’t very nice to directly tell him that he is quite immature, especially when he is 2 years older than me, had more life and working experience than me. Well, by not explaining to him directly, I am reducing the damage to his ego. Furthermore, he has been feeling rather heartbroken for weeks, although he refused to admit. This makes it even harder for me to tell him directly. Perhaps, reducing the damage to his ego is useless since I am now someone who hurt his ego as you can read from his blog post here. Do take note, he spelled “hurt” as “heard”.
Don’t ask me why he spelled it as that way. I hope that he will be editing his blog post to correct the word later.
I know some of my friends can understand why I think “What the heck” is a vulgarity. Argh. How many vulgarities have I heard since I entered university? For those who don’t know me until university, I hated people to use vulgarities in the past. If any guy used any form of vulgarities in front of me, I will definitely rolled my eyes. This reminds of an incident during one of the CCA meeting back in JC. Joseph only used 1 vulgarity and I just lost my cool. Fortunately, James was there to cool both of us down. Actually, Joseph is the one who was more agitated. Or else, I can’t imagine what will happened next. Unfortunately, I think the blog post is on my previous blog, Sweet Patronus, and was lost forever. Oh well… A pity that I can’t copy the blog link for you all to read how irritated I am whenever someone used a vulgarities in front of me.
That’s one of the reasons why I am finding it hard to adapt to university life on my first semester last year.
That’s another change that I had after entering university: becoming nonchalant whenever someone uses a vulgarity. This reminds that Zhen Xiang almost used a vulgarity twice when I first met him. Yes, I remembered clearly about that although I took some time to remember his name. I wonder how come he suddenly stopped himself from using one. Could it be that James informed him that using vulgarities in front of me can caused him a lot of demerit points?
Okay. I feel much better after ranting. Well, that’s another reason for a blog: a place for you to rant when you need to. It’s unhealthy to bottle up your emotions.
